Toorak is an affluent riverside suburb located five kilometres southeast of Melbourne`s central business district. Renowned as the city`s most prestigious suburb, Toorak commands Melbourne`s highest average property values. The suburb`s wide and leafy avenues are lined with some of Melbourne`s most opulent and expansive single block homes. Toorak is found between South Yarra to the west and Kooyong to the east.
The suburb was named after Toorak House, an Italianate residence built in 1849. The house served as the residence of the Governor of Victoria until the completion of Government House in 1876. The name Toorak may have derived from the Woiwurrung language. During the land boom of the 1880s, Toorak became a favoured location for the wealthy with many large and opulent mansions being erected in the suburb. While little of Toorak`s historic housing stock remains, the suburb has endured as Melbourne`s most exclusive residential area.
Toorak Village is the suburb`s primary commercial hub, and is found on Toorak Road in the suburb`s west. Among Toorak`s most exclusive streets are St Georges Road, Albany Road, Towers Road, Clendon Road and Irving Road. A number of homes in the suburb`s north enjoy direct water frontage on the Yarra River.
