St Kilda East is a residential suburb located six kilometres southeast of Melbourne`s central business district. The suburb is found between St Kilda to the west and Caulfield North to the east. St Kilda East is a multicultural and diverse suburb with a prominent Hasidic Jewish community. The portion of the suburb surrounding Carlisle Street is well known as an artistic and bohemian area.
Following European settlement, St Kilda East was established during the mid-19th century. Alma Park was officially opened in the suburb in 1868 and many blocks surrounding it were set aside for religious purposes. Terraced housing was built around the railway line in the 1870s and in the 1950s, St Kilda East`s streetscape changed with the rapid development of small apartment buildings in the suburb.
Alma Park and St Kilda Cemetery are found in the suburb`s north; both are found on large blocks stretching from Alma Road to Dandenong Road. St Kilda East is mostly a quiet tree-lined residential suburb; bustling high streets are found in neighbouring Balaclava and Ripponlea, on Carlisle Street and Glen Eira Road respectively.
