Southbank is an inner-city precinct located across river to Melbourne`s formal central business district. The suburb`s many skyscrapers and office towers allow the area to often be considered a part of Melbourne CBD. Southbank is renowned for its riverside entertainment precinct and its arts district, which is home to the National Gallery of Victoria.
Up until the 1990s, Southbank was largely an industrial area and part of the South Melbourne locality. An urban renewal program in the early 1990s saw the district transformed into a densely populated residential and commercial area, as it exists today. The Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex was opened in Southbank in 1997, having formerly been located on the north bank of the Yarra; and the National Gallery of Victoria was significantly redeveloped and reopened in 2003.
Southbank`s riverside promenade features a plethora of fine dining restaurants and waterside bars, some of the most popular of which include: Bistro Guillaume; Rockpool Bar & Grill; The Atlantic; and Spice Temple. The world-renowned National Gallery of Victoria is located on St Kilda Road, opposite Queen Victoria Gardens. Australia`s tallest building by roof height, Australia 108, is found on Southbank Boulevard.
