History
Up until the 1990s, Southbank was largely an industrial area and part of the South Melbourne locality. An urban renewal program in the early 1990s saw the district transformed into a densely populated residential and commercial area, as it exists today. The Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex was opened in Southbank in 1997, having formerly been located on the north bank of the Yarra; and the National Gallery of Victoria was significantly redeveloped and reopened in 2003.
