South Yarra is an affluent riverside suburb located four kilometres southeast of Melbourne's central business district. The suburb is home to Melbourne's iconic Chapel Street shopping precinct, and also features upscale commercial strips on Toorak Road and Commercial Road. South Yarra is coveted for its central location, prestigious homes and pleasant leafy streetscape.
The area that makes up South Yarra today was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri tribe of the Kulin nation. Following European settlement, South Yarra was established in the 1830s and quickly became popular with wealthy citizens as a suburban retreat from central Melbourne. Along with neighbouring Toorak, South Yarra has always maintained its reputation as a prestigious suburb. From the 1930s up until today, apartment buildings have continued to be built in the suburb and as a result, South Yarra is one of the most densely populated suburbs in Melbourne.
Toorak Road, between Punt Road and Chapel Street, is home to a wide array of upscale restaurants, cafes, boutiques and specialty stores, some of which include: France Soir; Mecca Cosmetica; and Bar Carolina. The iconic Prahran Market is found on Commercial Road near to Chapel Street and offers locals a selection of the finest produce, meats and other foodie staples. Fawkner Park and Como Park are South Yarra's largest green spaces, and the Royal Botanic Gardens are found adjacent to the suburb's northwestern border.
