History
The area that makes up South Yarra today was originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri tribe of the Kulin nation. Following European settlement, South Yarra was established in the 1830s and quickly became popular with wealthy citizens as a suburban retreat from central Melbourne. Along with neighbouring Toorak, South Yarra has always maintained its reputation as a prestigious suburb. From the 1930s up until today, apartment buildings have continued to be built in the suburb and as a result, South Yarra is one of the most densely populated suburbs in Melbourne.
