History
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Port Melbourne today was formerly known as Sandridge. In the 1850s, during the Victorian Gold Rush, Port Melbourne became a thriving shipping port, with freight transported to Melbourne CBD via the now decommissioned Port Melbourne railway line. While much of the suburb remains industrial, Port Melbourne is increasingly being transformed into an affluent residential suburb.
