History
The suburb adopted its name when Murrumbeena railway station opened in 1879. It is derived from the Aboriginal word mirambeena, which may have, at one time, meant "land of frogs" or "moss growing on decayed wood". Murrumbeena Village dates back to the 19th century and is today heritage protected due to its brick and rendered building facades. The suburb has hosted a variety of thriving artists throughout its history, most notably during the mid-20th century, including Sidney Nolan, Merric Boyd, John Percival, Joy Hester and more.
