Mont Albert is an inner eastern suburb located 12 kilometres east of Melbourne`s central business district. Mont Albert is primarily a residential suburb and is found between Mont Albert North to the north and Surrey Hills to the south. The suburb features its own train station and is serviced by the Lilydale and Belgrave railway lines.
Mont Albert was named after Queen Victoria`s husband Prince Albert. Mont Albert railway station opened in 1890 and Mont Albert Post Office opened in 1914. The local shopping strip was developed in 1913 and around that time, the suburb also began to develop residentially. Edwardian, English Domestic Revival and Arts and Crafts styles of architecture were particularly popular in Mont Albert in the early 20th century.
The suburb features a quaint shopping strip, largely based on Hamilton Street and Mont Alert Road, immediately south of Mont Albert Station. Mont Albert`s largest green space is Kingsley Gardens, which is found on Whitehorse Road, near to neighbouring Box Hill.
