History
Following the European settlement of Australia, Melbourne was established in 1835 and the earliest parts of the city were laid out in 1837. Surveyor Robert Hoddle planned and implemented an ordered grid of streets to cover an area of 1 by 0.5 miles (1.61km by 0.80km). This layout now defines Melbourne CBD's ground level streetscape and is today known as the Hoddle Grid. The city was named after British Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, whose seat was Melbourne Hall in Melbourne, Derbyshire.
