Van Gogh Flowers | Gorgeous fresh flowers delivered to Kensington today!
Kensington is an inner-city suburb located four kilometres northwest of Melbourne`s central business district. The suburb is found between Flemington Racecourse and the Maribyrnong River to the west, and North Melbourne to the east. Formerly home to one of Victoria`s largest abattoirs, Kensington experienced urban renewal in the `80s and `90s and is today coveted for its village feel and diversity of architecture.
Following European settlement, Kensington was established as a part of the City of Essendon in 1861. The suburb is named after Kensington in London. For over a century, the area was largely defined by its abattoir, livestock saleyards and associated businesses. After the closure of these facilities in the 1980s, Kensington was gentrified into a primarily residential area.
Kensington`s main shopping strips are found on Racecourse Road in the north, and Macaulay Road in the suburb`s central portion. Kensington`s most expansive green spaces are: Riverside Park, found on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in the suburb`s west; and J J Holland Park, found adjacent to South Kensington train station.
