Van Gogh Flowers | Gorgeous fresh flowers delivered to Kensington today!
Kensington is an inner-city suburb located four kilometres northwest of Melbourne's central business district. The suburb is found between Flemington Racecourse and the Maribyrnong River to the west, and North Melbourne to the east. Formerly home to one of Victoria's largest abattoirs, Kensington experienced urban renewal in the '80s and '90s and is today coveted for its village feel and diversity of architecture.
Following European settlement, Kensington was established as a part of the City of Essendon in 1861. The suburb is named after Kensington in London. For over a century, the area was largely defined by its abattoir, livestock saleyards and associated businesses. After the closure of these facilities in the 1980s, Kensington was gentrified into a primarily residential area.
Kensington's main shopping strips are found on Racecourse Road in the north, and Macaulay Road in the suburb's central portion. Kensington's most expansive green spaces are: Riverside Park, found on the banks of the Maribyrnong River in the suburb's west; and J J Holland Park, found adjacent to South Kensington train station.
