Van Gogh Flowers | Gorgeous fresh flowers delivered to Hawthorn today!
Hawthorn is an affluent riverside suburb located six kilometres east of Melbourne`s central business district. Sitting on the eastern banks of the Yarra River, Hawthorn is primarily a residential suburb but also features a bustling commercial district. The suburb is found between Richmond to the west, and Hawthorn East to the east.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Hawthorn today was first settled in the 1830s. The suburb is believed to have been named after the flowering Hawthorn bush - to which the local area`s native shrubs were thought to bear resemblance. The boom of the Victorian Gold Rush saw the construction of the Hawthorn Bridge in 1861, which provided a significant gateway between central Melbourne and the eastern suburbs.
Among Hawthorn`s green spaces, Fairview Park and Yarra Bank Reserve enjoy riverside locations. And the suburb, along with neighbouring Richmond, features a number of riverside walking trails, which continue into neighbouring Kew. Hawthorn`s commercial district is concentrated on Glenferrie Road and Burwood Road, adjacent to Glenferrie train station. Hawthorn Station is found further afield in the suburb`s west. The Melbourne Tram Museum is located at 8 Wallen Road.
