Hawthorn East is an affluent residential suburb located seven kilometres east of Melbourne`s central business district. Found between Hawthorn to the west and Camberwell to the east, Hawthorn East is largely a residential area, but also features a thriving commercial district concentrated around Camberwell Road and Camberwell Junction.
Like neighbouring Hawthorn, the suburb is believed to have been named after the Hawthorn bush, which bears resemblance to the area`s native shrubs. The suburb was established in the early 1800s, and experienced a period of rapid development during the Victorian Gold Rush and following the construction of the Hawthorn Bridge in 1861. Many of the suburb`s 19th century public buildings and houses are well preserved and still stand today.
Rathmines Road Reserve, Fritsch Holzer Park and Anderson Park are Hawthorn East`s most significant green spaces. The suburb`s main shopping and commercial strips are found on Burwood Road and Camberwell Road. Auburn train station is found in western Hawthorn East, near to Victoria Road Reserve.
