Flemington is a residential and recreational suburb located four kilometres northwest of Melbourne`s central business district. The suburb is best known as the home of Flemington Racecourse, which hosts the Melbourne Cup Thoroughbred horse race each year. History
Flemington is named after one of its earliest European settler`s homeland - the Flemington Estate in Scotland. Land for Flemington Racecourse was allotted as early as 1845, with horse racing having been held in the area since 1840. The Melbourne Cup first took place in 1861, and since then, the thoroughbred horse race has been held annually at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday in November.
