Cremorne is a small inner-city suburb located two kilometres southeast of Melbourne`s central business district. Formerly a locality within the larger suburb of Richmond, Cremorne was made its own suburb in 1999. The suburb is coveted for its central and riverside location and Cremorne`s real estate is among the most sought-after in Melbourne. The suburb is found between Richmond to the north (and the east) and South Yarra to the south.
The suburb derives its name from Cremorne Gardens - an amusement park that existed on the suburb`s riverfront for a period during the 19th century. While Cremorne was a residential area in its early history, it became an industrial precinct in the early 20th century, with hundreds of factories operating in the district. Cremorne underwent a process of gentrification in the 1990s and is now a primarily residential area once again. The suburb is also home to a number of tech industry businesses.
Swan Street and Church Street are the suburb`s main commercial high streets; both feature a number of trendy pubs, cafes, bars and restaurants. Church Street, in particular, is notable for its selection of furniture and homewares stores. The Royal Botanic Gardens and other riverside parkland are within a short stroll from the suburb.
