Clifton Hill is a residential suburb located four kilometres northeast of Melbourne`s central business district. The suburb is found between Fitzroy North to the west and Fairfield to the east, with Merri Creek providing Clifton Hill`s natural northern and eastern borders. The suburb enjoys unusually spacious and picturesque streets (when compared to some of its more crowded inner-city neighbours) and is coveted for its well-preserved Victorian and Edwardian housing stock.
Clifton Hill was named after Clifton Farm, one of the first European properties in the area. Land in the suburb began to be sold in 1864 and the area boomed, like much of Melbourne, during the 1880s. Unlike many neighbouring areas, Clifton Hill was a largely planned suburb. Its elevated location, pleasantly wide streets and high calibre of housing led Clifton Hill to be described in 1886 as "The Toorak of Collingwood".
The suburb`s main shopping strip is based on Queens Parade, not far from Clifton Hill train station. Darling Gardens and Mayors Park are found in the central built-up portion of the suburb, the latter of which is home to Collingwood Leisure Centre. An extensive network of parks and ovals are also found along the suburb`s entire Merri Creek bank.
