Caulfield is a suburb located 12 kilometres southeast of Melbourne`s central business district. The greater Caulfield district is best known for Caulfield Racecourse and the Caulfield campus of Monash University. Caulfield is a largely residential suburb found between Caulfield North and Caulfield South. Along with Caulfield East, there are in total four "Caulfield" named suburbs.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Caulfield today was first developed as several distinct townships in the 1840s. Prior to that, the area was swampy, low-lying ground primarily used by pastoralists driving stock from Gippsland to Melbourne. The Caulfield Road District was consolidated in 1857 and a variety of grand mansions were built in the area for Melbourne`s wealthy in the decades that followed.
Caulfield Racecourse is found adjacent to the suburb`s northeastern border in Caulfield East. The suburb`s primary commercial strip is found on Glen Huntley Road, which is shared with neighbouring Caulfield South. Monash University`s Caulfield campus is found adjacent to Caulfield Station and opposite the racecourse.
