Carlton North is an inner-city suburb located four kilometres north of Melbourne`s central business district. In recent decades, the suburb has been significantly gentrified and is today coveted for its tasteful homes, trendy high street and convenient proximity to central Melbourne. Carlton North is home to Princes Park and the Melbourne General Cemetery. The suburb is found between Parkville to the west and Fitzroy North to the east.
The suburb is believed to have been named after Carlton House in London - the residence of the Prince of Wales, who later became King George IV. Princes Park was established in 1844 and became home to the Carlton Football Club in 1864. The site for Melbourne`s General Cemetery was earmarked in the area in 1853, after other cemeteries nearby had reached capacity. Like many inner-city suburbs, Carlton North was formerly a working class area, but is now a much-coveted residential district with property prices to match.
Princes Park, Carlton Recreation Ground and the Melbourne General Cemetery are all found in Carlton North`s western portion, with the latter featuring the Elvis Presley Memorial Garden. The suburb`s eastern side is largely residential land. Carlton North`s main commercial strips are Rathdowne Street and Nicholson Street; both feature trendy cafes, restaurants and fashion boutiques.
