Van Gogh Flowers | Gorgeous fresh flowers delivered to Canterbury today!
Canterbury is a prestigious residential suburb located 10 kilometres east of Melbourne`s central business district. Renowned for its wide, leafy boulevards and its substantial and luxurious historic residences, Canterbury is considered one of Melbourne`s most exclusive suburbs. Other neighbouring blue-ribbon suburbs include Balwyn to the north, Camberwell to the south, and Kew to the west.
The suburb is named after Viscount Canterbury, Governor of Victoria from 1866 to 1873; prior to being named Canterbury, the suburb was a part of neighbouring Balwyn. Following European settlement, the area that constitutes Canterbury today was semi rural, before developing into a prestigious residential suburb following the opening of Canterbury railway station in 1882. During the late 19th century, some of the suburb`s most ornate mansions were constructed and oak trees were planted along the suburb`s wide avenues.
Canterbury is well established as one of Melbourne`s most exclusive suburbs, and this is particularly evident around the "Golden Mile" - the blue-chip streets around Mont Albert Road, which are lined with magnificent century-old oak trees and grand historic mansions. The suburb is home to an array of parks and gardens, as well as a small shopping strip adjacent to Canterbury Station. Larger shopping centres are found in neighbouring Camberwell and Balwyn.
