History
Camberwell is named after the south London district of the same name. Following European settlement, the suburb was originally an agricultural district, but gradually developed into a well-heeled residential area following the expansion of Melbourne`s suburban railway network in the 1880s. Riversdale Station opened in the suburb in 1890, and the adjacent Prospect Hill Road precinct rapidly filled with large and sumptuous Victorian and Edwardian homes.
Points of Interest
Camberwell Junction and Burke Road, in Camberwell`s west, form the suburb`s primary shopping strip. Aside from this area, the suburb is largely residential and green space. Camberwell is home to a generous array of parks and reserves, the most notable of which are: Frog Hollow Reserve; Fordham Gardens; Lynden Park; Highfield Park; and Riversdale Park. Due to a hilly topography, many streets around Prospect Hill Road enjoy commanding views of Melbourne`s city skyline.
