History
Balwyn is named after one of the suburb`s earliest homes, Balwyn, which overlooked Canterbury Gardens and derived its name from the Gaelic bal and Saxon wyn, meaning "the home of the vine". The Balwyn Cinema first opened in 1930, and is currently operated by Palace Cinemas. The foyer and its original 1930s tiled floor were restored in 2010. Balwyn and Balwyn North developed into affluent residential districts in the postwar period. Both suburbs continue to be coveted today for their expansive and quiet residential blocks and wide tree-lined streets.
