Ashburton is a residential suburb located 12 kilometres southeast of Melbourne`s central business district. The suburb is considered an affluent area and is found to the south of Glen Iris and to the west of Ashwood. Gardiners Creek is Ashburton`s natural southwestern border with neighbouring Malvern East. The suburb is coveted for its lush tree-lined streets and village-style shopping strip.
Ashburton is named after Ashburton Terrace in Cork, Ireland. Ashburton railway station, which is today serviced by the Alamein line, opened in 1890, but residential development in the suburb did not significantly pick up until the postwar period. Prior to that, the suburb was best known for Ashburton forest, which overlooked Gardiners Creek and was a popular site for picnics. The suburb gradually developed into a residential area in the 1920s and in 1948, Ashburton`s second railway station opened - Alamein Station.
Ashburton`s primary shopping strip is found on High Street, in the suburb`s north, not far from Ashburton Station. The suburb is home to a pleasant array of green spaces including: Ashburton Park; Watson Park; and Anniversary Trail Linear Reserve. A series of parks, gardens and reserves are also found in Ashburton`s south, adjacent to Gardiners Creek.
