History
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Abbotsford today was first subdivided in 1838. The suburb was initially a working-class and industrial area. The Abbotsford Convent was established in the suburb during the 19th century and for over 100 years, provided shelter, food, education and work for socially disadvantaged women and children. The convent was added to the National Heritage List in 2017 and is today used as an arts, education and culture hub.
